LECTURERS

Carsten Peter

Carsten Peter is an award winning German photographer, who is specialized in going into extremes of nature. His specialty are erupting volcanoes, difficult caves or chasing tornadoes, all coverages for National Geographic. He loves outdoor sports and employs climbing, diving flying for his explorations with the camera. Next to an EMMY award he received two World Press Photo awards and what means most to him: the National Geographic photographer’s photographer award, an election within his own peer group.

A few words from Carsten:

“I like to push limits and I am fascinated especially by new discoveries or new visions of nature. I love to involve innovative technologies to surprise and uncover the unknown. In the end I hope to be an ambassador for the uniqueness and vulnerability of nature and hope it results in protection. Unfortunately this is not always the case.”

For the Inspiration Photo Conference he will take us on a powerful journey in an “Extreme Planet”, joining together three breathtaking stories:

  • Part 1 – Introduction about the climb into an active volcano. It is an adventurous descend to the shores of the biggest lava lake in the world in Nyiragongo volcano in Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • Part 2 – The spectacular exploration of the cave Hang Son Doong in Vietnam with award winning photographs. It is supposedly the biggest gallery in the world and has sinkholes with even forests inside the cave.
  • Part 3 – Tornado chasing in the USA. After three years intensive chasing our team became finally very successful in getting probes into a tornado. We measured a world record in barometric pressure drop

Svetlana Bachevanova

PHOTOGRAPHY AS AN EVIDENCE

Can an Image Change the Course of History?

http://www.fotoevidence.com/

Svetlana Bachevanova is a long time photojournalist and the publisher at FotoEvidence, a publishing house and activist organization that supports documentary photography focused on human rights and social justice.
Svetlana became a photojournalist during the transition from dictatorship to democracy in her native Bulgaria. Passionate about social justice she joined the first democratic newspaper “Democrazia,” documenting the end of a long lasting Communist regime.
In 2001, Svetlana moved to New York where she and her partner David Stuart founded FotoEvidence in the tradition of using photography to draw attention to injustice, oppression and assaults on human dignity wherever they may occur.  FotoEvidence is now internationally recognized as a premier publisher of documentary photography and an active partner with human rights organizations.
For eight years, the FotoEvidence Book Award recognized one photographer whose work demonstrates courage and commitment in the pursuit of social justice and, in 2017, FotoEvidence partnered with World Press Photo.  The book award was renamed the FotoEvidence Book Award with World Press Photo. The selected project is published by FotoEvidence as part of a series of photo books dedicated to the work of photographers, whose commitment and courage deliver painful truths, creating awareness and intolerance towards violations of human dignity.

Rafal Bojar

THE ART OF STORYTELLING

Crafting a cinematic narrative of intimacy

My name’s Rafał, and I’m passionate about storytelling

Once upon a time, a famous traveler called love the greatest adventure. In my many years, I stopped by in countless foreign countries across Europe, the Middle East and North America. I visited many places. Wherever I went, I met incredible people, and the stunning observation was that, despite our evident differences, we all share one specific trait. Everyone – regardless of their origin – falls in love.

One day, as the plane of my life finally touched the ground and I gave up my flight attendant career, my friends invited me to their wedding. They asked me to take pictures of the ceremony.

That was the beginning. I understood my destination was still ahead of me. I felt pure and incredibly privileged to be able to capture the rare moment in which two become one. The moment of confession of eternal love.
